Fun Monday - I'm the Boss

This is our challenge, this week, from Mommy Wisdom: If you were ruler for a day/week/month/year (your choice on the time) you would...ex...make coffee free to all citizens. Or you'd abolish the penny. You may also specify if you're ruler of the world or just your country. Have fun with it; be creative.

Excuse me, perhaps you weren't aware, I am the Ruler of My World. There is only one draw-back, I have no one to delegate to, except Bob, and he just doesn't co-operate all that much. So, this is how it works. I am in charge of just about everything.

✓Most decisions
✓Purchasing
✓Accounting
✓Hiring
✓Firing
✓Scheduling
✓Entertainment
✓Meal Prep, or Dinners out
✓Gardening
✓Reading

This is what I'm not in charge of:

✓Dishwashing
✓Dogwalking
✓Watching TV

It is not an equal division, but it has worked for quite some time.

I have run companies, but I can not imagine ruling the world or a country. But if I could, or did, drumroll please, I would change Adult Reading Habits. I strongly feel that many of the problems we have in the world would be solved, if adults set a better standard (example), regarding reading and books. It's hard for a child to suceed, at many things, if they don't read.

I see it every day, at work. A parent comes to the bookstore with their child's required reading list, and the adult has no idea what these books are. More than half the parents are not readers, and many can't tell you the difference between fiction and non-fiction. True.

So, that's what I would change - Adult Reading Habits. I think we would be a better country, and a better world if everyone enjoyed a good book on a regular basis.

Well, I can gladly say, I don't think you will be changing my reading habits! My dh insists that me reading fiction is a waste of time, he says I should read computer manuals! Blah! Thats what he's for after all! I like to get lost in a good story, far more entertaining than tv which NEVER gives the book justice!

You will be glad to know that my kids have a varying array of books fiction and non fiction. I love books!

Ahhhh... I so agree. One of my proudest accomplishments as a parent of a 9 and 11 year old is that they both love to read. I truly think it is because *I* love to read!

Being one that doesn't read much I would have to say that I could fall into your categories that you mention. But I take not offense. I read self help books.

A better educated and well rounded populace would be a good result of your idea.

Agreed! Agreed! Agreed!

Having spent the last four years as school librarian, I saw my responsibility as helping those kids, whom the teachers have taught how to read, to want to.

I am visiting my brother in Murrieta. We will leave early in the morning, but I may, at some time this afternoon come down to B&N and say "Hurrah to the Queen!" at least if I see someone who looks anything like your picture on duty. If there is someone else there who looks a bit like you I will leave them wondering!

Intriguing ‘edict’ here … for some of us have excellent reading habits already. I do agree that it behooves parents to inform themselves about appropriate reading material for themselves and their children. There’s a lot of research indicating that kids learn more from watching what we DO than listening to what we SAY.
Hugs and blessings,

Well, and I totally forgot to say "Hurrah for the Queen!" but it was neat to meet you and you knew exactly where to find the book I needed.

Spoken like a true book salesperson, or a dedicated reader.

I think you should first insist that everybody learns to read !! There are still people even amongst our "sophisticated" society they can't read or write !

That is a great idea indeed!
The first part of your post made me smile! It's exactly the same here, except ... we don't have a dog!!!

You do have an excellent point. When my children were young, I took some neighborhood children to the library throughout one summer. Somehow we arranged for the children to get their own library cards. After the girls checked out a few books, their mother thanked and informed me that she would put up the books until the next library trip so the books would not get messed up. She could not be convinced that there was any other option.

I was listening to a talk show on the drive to work- children and reading was the topic.

There were many wonderful suggestions on how to get young people away from computers - and into classics.

Here's your first suggested slogan:
Vote for Jan, she's our woMAN.

ha ha ha ha.
