Books and Movies

Today we saw Charlie Wilson's War. It was pretty good. It followed George Crile's book closely. The tag line for the movie is: "A stiff drink. A little mascara. A lot of nerve. Who said they couldn't bring down the Soviet empire." And that pretty much explains this drama based on Texas congressman Charlie Wilson's covert dealings in Afghanistan, where his efforts to assist rebels in their war with the Soviets have some unforeseen and long-reaching effects. Speaking of Texas, Julia Roberts did sport some serious big hair and tremendous amounts of mascara. While Roberts and Tom Hanks played their roles well, I thought Amy Adams and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were outstanding.
