Shoes
I know I'm getting older. My philosophy is "Getting Old Is Good", it's so much better than the alternative. At this stage of my life, I'm all about comfort. While reading the newspapers this week, I was struck by the New Shoes for Spring the designers are showing. Most of the shoes, below (clipped from the NYTimes), cost more than $1000. That in itself is amazing to me; but what was even more amazing was how ugly most of them were; not all but most. I'd also bet they were designed my some one who's not going to have to ever wear them; and they certainly don't look very comfortable.
Now that I've bitched, here's a funny video that ties in.

Three Words
I don't watch much television, so I'd never heard of My Week in Three Words, until my cousin Wayne sent a video link about it. It got me thinking how would I summarize my week, in just three words.
I think this week they would be RAIN GO AWAY!
What would your three words be?
I took this from my dry kitchen.

Sunday
This is pretty long, almost 8 minutes, but the music is relaxing and the people are interesting. Hope you enjoy it.

Stethoscope
This is a YouTube video that my cousin Christine sent via email. At the end is a Christian message, so be forewarned, or skip it if you're offended.

Merry Christmas from Snowball
This is a remarkable video. Snowball actually dances. The video is rather long, over 4 minutes, but if you take the time to view it entirely, you'll see Snowball change beats and gyrations, according to the tune that is playing. Snowball was studied by Aniruddh Patel, senior fellow at the Neurosciences Institute in California and he concluded "Like a child, he synched to the music...Statistically those periods when he's locked onto the beat are not by chance-they really do indicate sensitivity to the beat and an ability to synchronize with tit" Patel says dancing is associated with our vocal abilities, not musical hard wiring. Humans and parrots are two of the few species with brains wired for vocal learning - hearing sounds (like words), then coordinating complex movements (lips, tongues, vocal cords) to reproduce those sounds. Other animals who have this ability: dolphins seals and whales. "In theory," he says, "they may be able to dance, too. We just don't know it yet."
If you enjoyed this, snowball has other videos on YouTube: in a commercial, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbud5WnNpbI, with Ringo, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqFG4tnX2IE, with Stevie Nicks, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYMBIGTteWA, and a few more.
A book that covers parrots vocal abilites is one of my favorites this year: Alex and Me by Irene Pepperberg.

Music to my ears - Friday
This one's for Bob. No, he hasn't gone to the other side, but yesterday, while he was in the ER, he was treated with cocaine! Amazing. It's not just for the streets, any more.
Bob's on multiple blood thinners, and Wednesday night his nose started bleeding, not gushing, just bleeding; but it wouldn't stop. Twelve hours later, we went to the ER. They took wonderful care of him, including using cocaine to stop his nose from bleeding.
